A good home instrument plays an important role in your child’s musical development.
For students beginning formal piano study, we recommend an 88-key, touch-sensitive digital piano with weighted hammer-action keys whenever possible. Weighted keys provide resistance similar to an acoustic piano, helping children gradually develop finger control, coordination, dynamic expression, and healthy piano technique.
For very young beginners, a quality touch-sensitive keyboard can be a practical starting point. As technique develops however, we recommend transitioning to a fully weighted digital or acoustic piano.

As your child’s technique develops, we recommend upgrading to one of the 88-key weighted hammer-action digital pianos. The NP-35 has a deliberately lighter feel and does not provide the same weighted hammer action as a digital piano
Before Purchasing a Keyboard
Whenever possible, choose an instrument that your child can grow into rather than quickly grow out of.
A quality weighted piano makes home practice more enjoyable and allows the technique your child learns in class to transfer naturally to the instrument they use every day.
We strongly recommend avoiding keyboards that do not have touch-sensitive keys. Without touch sensitivity, pressing a key softly or firmly produces essentially the same response, limiting a child’s ability to develop musical dynamics and expressive control.
For students pursuing ongoing piano study, touch sensitivity alone is not enough. A weighted hammer-action keyboard becomes increasingly important as students develop finger strength, coordination, tone control, pedalling, and more advanced technique.
For current RCM remote piano examinations, a tuned acoustic piano is recommended. For Preparatory through Level 8, RCM permits a weighted-touch electronic keyboard with at least 76 keys, although 88 keys are preferred. At higher levels, an acoustic piano is required under RCM’s current remote examination conditions.
